Jungle Surfing and SD Racing Team Up for MotoGP Support - 20-09-2008

Jungle Surfing, 2006 Queensland Tourism Award Winner, will make it's debut involvement in Australian Motorcycle Road Racing this coming weekend, with the Jungle Surfing Suzuki GSX-R 1000 entered in the Superbike support class at the 2008 Australian MotoGP.

Originally Jungle Surfing's Steve Walsh had hoped to pilot the GSX-R around the super fast Phillip Island circuit however a prolonged recovery from previous injuries has ruled him out. Rather than see the Jungle Surfing bike sidelined, the Daintree rainforest based tourism business has formed a partnership with SD Racing's Darren Sciberras to take the reins of the number 43 machine.

While at first glance motorcycle racing may seem an obscure association for an environmentally focussed tourism business, with less environmental impact two-wheeled transport provides an excellent alternative to motorist for their daily commute. The association shows that no matter what activities we are involved with, we all need to be environmentally conscious and focussed. Sometimes small changes in how we do things can have a big affect and motorcycles provide an alternative with a sense of adventure not dissimilar to Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours themselves.

In a weekend of first for Jungle Surfing and SD Racing, this will also be the first time Darren has competed on a 1000cc Superbike and it will be an exciting challenge to come to grips with the awesome power of a modern Superbike. A recent 2 day test at Phillip Island was Daz's first real opportunity to come to terms with the bigger bike, while we made steady progress we expect to have our work cut out just to get into the top 20.

Darren's comments on the coming weekend: “I am very excited about the coming weekend, not only to have my first race in the Superbike class but also to be involved in something new and different with Jungle Surfing. This year has been pretty tough in Supersport so you wouldn't think it was a great foundation to jump up to a Superbike, but I think it will be great fun none the less. Our bike is pretty standard which I am actually very happy about, it's already scary enough trying to harness the power of a stock bike let alone of full blown Superbike. The biggest difference I have noticed between the 600 and the 1000 is that someone has replaced the throttle with a burn out switch! It really doesn't take much throttle at all to have the tyre pleading for mercy, so luckily I have had Trevor Manley on hand to help get the best setup possible and hopefully I can do the Jungle Surfing GSX-R and the team justice.”

Regardless of what the weekend holds for us, it is sure to be a thrilling and adventurous weekend.
