200km/h Impact with Concrete Wall Halts 2009 Preparations for Super Daz - 07-02-2009

SD Racing's Darren Sciberras was extremely fortunate to get away with only a few minor fractures in his left hand after a sickening crash during testing at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on Wednesday 4 th of February 2009. It was a simple but very unfortunate case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Daz was exiting the ultra fast turn 12 onto the main straight in the slipstream of another bike when the rider in front shut the throttle on race line leaving Daz with no options and nowhere to go other than straight into the back of the bike in front.

"It really isn't something you expect and even if I was expecting it I am not sure I would have been able to do anything about it anyway. I managed to slightly roll off the throttle just before impact which lessened the initial force but as soon as our tyres touched the front just folded and I was on the deck before I even knew what was happening. From there I just did my best to relax as much as possible but it was seriously a bit frightening falling at that speed on race line. Not only was the tumble itself pretty violent but I was worried about any other following bikes or my own bike hitting me. It all seemed to go on for an eternity but I am just thankful that I was able to get straight up and off the track and that no one else was hurt or collected by my tumbling bike. I also felt sorry for Lisa because I knew she was watching and I know I wouldn't like to see something like that!"

The bike however was not so lucky and sustained major damage after it collided with the concrete pit wall at 200km/h. The beautifully MotoLogic prepared CBR600RR came scarily close to tumbling over pit wall which could have been very serious for anyone standing in pit lane so it's just a miracle no one was injured. The tyre marks on the pit wall were huge and probably only matched in proportion by the skid marks in Dazza's jocks.

Only 3 weeks out from the first round and without a bike our 2009 campaign isn't looking very good, Paul Free and the team at MotoLogic have been fantastic and are doing everything they can to assist but we are going to need some further outside assistance to get it all up and running in time. If any organisation out there is looking to raise their profile we are extremely focused on providing serious value for your advertising dollar.

We would like to say a huge thanks to the following people:

Simon Maas and the Suzuki RACESAFE team, the paramedics and all those contributing to rider safety, they make a huge contribution to the sport and we are extremely grateful to have them looking after us. Mark Backway (the world's best physio) of the North Melbourne Physiotherapy Clinic for all his help getting the injuries on the road to recovery, Russell Baker for all his hard work and support it's just been fantastic, Trevor Manley , MotoLogic, And All the well wishers.

Although it's a race against time, we will be doing our best to make the grid at Phillip Island in 3 weeks time.

To cap off what has been a bad week motorcycle wise for the team, both Darren 's and Lisa's dirt bikes were stolen, leaving us 3 bikes down in the space of 4 days.
