A Couple of Young Fans

Beautiful sunshine and awesome racing were the themes of Round 4 of the Australian Superbike Championship this past weekend at Queensland Raceway. The racing across all classes provided first rate entertainment for the strong crowd and the GYT-R Superstock Cup field certainly played its part with some exciting battles. Some of which SD Racing's Darren Sciberras was fortunate enough to be involved with.

With Darren's broken ribs almost fully heeled the team was looking forward to a strong showing on the back of some great performances from the Team's 2 other riders, Lisa Brothers and Ian Wiltshire in the Hartwell and Interclub series. Although Darren's performance this weekend may not look so good on paper, the team was extremely proud and happy with how the weekend paned out in what was truly a fun filled weekend.

Local rider's Anton Kokshoorn & Anthony Quinn set a cracking pace from the outset and went on to fight it out for the weekend's honours, with Kokshoorn emerging as the eventual winner, but the SD Racing rider, along with a few other usual front runners, weren't too far behind. At the conclusion of Friday's proceedings Darren had managed to set the 4 th fastest time and was looking good for securing his second front row start for the season. The team was well aware that another strong performance was required in Saturday's final qualifying session but unfortunately Super Daz was not so super on Saturday morning and fell back to 7 th by the end of final qualifying which was where he would start for the weekend's three races.

Pushing the Front Tyre Hard

Ian trying to sort out the spacer issue

The team's debrief following qualifying revealed that the main spacer between the handle bars and seat had not been functioning properly but unfortunately the problem reoccurred during Race 1 on Saturday afternoon. After an even start Super Dag Daz plodded along to finish where he started in 7 th , lucky not to finish further back after local rider Josh Houwen crashed out. After a good night's sleep the mood was once again upbeat and the TW-Performance powered team was hopeful of turning around Saturday's fortunes. As the lights went out for race 2 it was quickly obvious that the problem with the main spacer had again resurfaced and by the end of the 2 nd lap Darren had fallen down to 12 th position losing touch with the lead bunch. Miraculously the problem seemed to resolve itself on lap 3 and the following 6 laps saw an exciting come back. Darren produced some impressive overtaking moves on his way back to 7 th and then continued his charge to bridge the substantial gap between himself and 5 th & 6 th placed Ian Andrews and Scott Yates. The laps ran out and although Darren managed to pull right up onto the tail of Yates and Andrews, time ran out and 7 th was where he would finish the second race.

With another even start in race 3 Darren picked up from where he had left off and moved from 7 th up to 5 th on the opening laps which then saw him locked in a battle with Josh Houwen and Chris Trounson. Fighting hard to keep Trounson at bay, Darren managed to find a way passed Houwen into 4 th only to have the Queenslander get straight back passed as the two exited turn three side by side with only millimeters separating them. Darren continued trying to sneak passed Houwen, as Trounson in turn tried to find a way passed Darren, but both efforts were futile and Daz crossed the line in 5 th behind Houwen but ahead of Trounson. The result was good enough to elevate Darren to 6 th overall for the weekend and into 8 th in the series with three rounds, Tasmania , Winton and Eastern Creek, to go.

A very Entertaining Battle

The pass on Houwen didn't stick

So although the results aren't exactly what we set out for, it was still a great weekend for the team. Yes Darren is still without a win this year, as a couple of particular sods like to remind him, BUT at least he kept his butt off the deck for the whole weekend!!!
