Very Tricky Conditions, like snot on lino!

Finally!!!! SD Racing's Darren Sciberras was able to complete his comeback to the GYTR Australian Superstock Cup at a miserable and wet Eastern Creek without any spills or disasters. The weekend started off fine and sunny during Friday and Saturday's proceeding before the weather gods turned nasty for Sunday's main race day, drenching the circuit with unrelenting rain. Just making it out onto the track was a huge challenge for the team with the late arrival of parts resulting many late nights just to get the bike ready to roll out of pit late come Friday morning. A big thank you needs to go out to Megacycle and Cousins Engineering for their help getting the R6 ready to race.

Once out on the track it was obvious that it was going to take Daz a while to pull his finger out and get comfortable on the bike, sitting back in 14 th after first practice and with a lot of work to do. Daz was always going to be playing catch-up, especially as we decided to try a few new things with the bike setup that ideally we would have tested prior to arriving at the final round, giving him plenty to whine and moan about. Still work we did, altering the setup continually all weekend and by the end of qualifying Darren had moved up to 9 th place. Still nothing flash and a little disappointing but progress none the less.

The first race saw a spirited ride after a horrible first lap, Daz had slipped well down the order, to about 17 th or 18 th position, after running too hot into turn 2 on the opening lap while trying to make up for a poor grid position. Although not quite on the pace of the front runners he set about putting the fastest laps he could and by race end had moved up to 9 th place, getting faster as the race went on and closing down a big gap to the riders in front. With the help of suspension guru, Trevor Manley , a number of changes where made to the bike on Saturday night and we sat quite confidant that we would find more pace during Sunday's races as the bike improved and Daz got more and more up to speed. You wouldn't think it would take someone with only 1 brain cell very long to get it up to speed but apparently it does!

We arrived Sunday to a soaked circuit and we certainly weren't going to find out if our dry pace had improved. Superstock rules do not allow special race wets to be used so just staying upright was going to be a huge challenge for everyone in the field. Race 2 was all about survival, not only did the competitors have to deal with the conditions on totally inadequate rubber but also avoid fellow competitors falling in front of them and oil being deposited onto the track as the race went on. Somewhat surprisingly our Super Daz managed to stay up right and was awarded 10 th place when the race was red flagged due to the amount of carnage. The result could have been even better however the red flag saw the results taking from the previous lap giving riders who actually fell off on the lap the race was stopped a reprieve.

Obviously Chas #24 was having trouble with his visor, Daz opted for a tinted screen, seeing the track would have been scary!

Race 3 was much the same, this time the field managed to finish the entire race and Daz ended up once again in 9 th giving him an overall result of 9 th for the round. Nothing flash but a finish none the less.

Darren Sciberras: "What a bizarre weekend, the whether was shocking on Sunday. Riding around that track on those tyres was like snot on lino! Still once I started to get used to the conditions I actually didn't mind it so much. From a spectators point of view it was a bit of a joke, we must have looked so slow out there but at least they would have seen a few spills. The boys out the front were flying in those conditions, I was having enough trouble just staying on the thing so hats off to them. While my results weren't very good I am wrapped to finally get back racing and finish a weekend. We were making really good progress in the dry and I was starting to feel confidant again. With missing most of the series and not riding much this year, now I feel like I am all dressed up with nowhere to go! Still it was good to finish of the year out on the track rather than sit it out. Even though it's been a tough and painful 2007, I am more determined than ever to continue racing and continue improving, I had a ball!!!!!!!

I want to say a huge thank you to my fiancée Lisa, she has made a difficult year an awesome one!"

Our 2008 plans are currently up in the air, Daz will compete in the remainder of the 2007 MRRDA Formula 400 tri-state, starting off this weekend at Wakefield Park where the battle of Super Daz and Mega Ken will resume..although it's fair to say that Mega wiped the floor with Daz last time out. Lisa will join in the fun at the MRRDA finale at Phillip Island in October.

A big thank you to everyone for all there help and support this year, especially during my recovery and stay safe!
